Lou Holtz
"In the successful organization, no detail is too small to escape close attention."
Lou Holtz is best known for his prestigious career as an NCAA and NFL head coach, but he also holds the title of motivational speaker, writer, and television commentator. His road to success began in 1960 at the University of Iowa where Holtz worked as an assistant coach after attending Kent State in college. He went on to assist at several prominent colleges such as Ohio State, and South Carolina until becoming a head coach at William and Mary. This marked the first jobs in a long career in coaching.Holtz is known for his ability to revive struggling teams; he took William and Mary to their first bowl at the Orange bowl, turned around Notre Dame's football record in 1986, and brought back wheezing South Carolina Gamecocks from a 0-11 to an 8-4 record. Holtz is the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to final top 20 rankings. He is also a multiple winner of Coach of the Year honors.
His knowledge of football lead to opportunities in the media, including his role as a football analyst on ESPN's College Gameday Final . His quick wit and inspiring pep talks primed him for motivational speaking, as well as the writing of several books. In his writing, Holtz often uses football to illustrate universal truth about success and morals. Some of his works include Wins, Losses and Lessons, Winning Every Day , and A Teen's Game Plan for Life . Holtz has contributed to several charity projects, including several sports tournaments which have raised a substantial amount of money for charitable services across the country.
Holtz and his wife Beth are the parents of four children -- Luanne Altenbaumer, Skip, Kevin, and Elizabeth Messaglia.
